Welcome to 2022. Let's Get YOU Training Smarter
Before we begin, start by being proud of yourself. I mean it! Give yourself a pat on the back. It's something we rarely take time to do. I know myself all too well and am by far my biggest critic, often succumbing to negative self talk and shame. Simply taking it upon yourself to be proactive in your health by wanting to stay up on the latest findings in clinical research or by seeking out different health & fitness resources are great tools to take advantage of.
My name is Brian Heep and I live in Clarksville, Indiana. I’m currently beginning my last year of graduate school completing my masters in nutrition & human performance through Logan University. Upon graduation, I plan to begin my clinical internship in dietetics, to then sit for the registered dietician exam upon conclusion of that. What I’m planning to do is to provide you all a monthly installment here of all information pertaining to nutrition & exercise; debunking myths and offering up some common discussions I have with people in a written Q&A/discussion format. I decided to go back to school, deviate from my current path and focus on nutrition & dietetics after working nearly a decade in NCAA football and the National Football League working everything as a student equipment manager, coaching, recruiting and team travel operations.
HEALTH-Having good health & being healthy. Ask yourself what it means to you.
Having a healthy body or having the sense of living a healthy life is not only subjective, but it can take the form of so many things. So many modalities you associate it with, your general mindset or even objectively- placing a number on it, be it a weight number or something like your recent results from a blood draw. The point is, nobody is wrong when they are living THEIR healthy life.
I myself have battled with this question and attempted to push myself to constantly find that "Next Level" of a healthy lifestyle. I love speaking with people who are either at a complete loss or just overwhelmed with inputs coming from all directions relating to nutrition & exercise. It's not because I get pleasure from seeing people flop around from one piece of information or ideology here, and another here, but because I've been exactly where you are. How should I exercise? What should I eat? And every other question associated with that.
So getting down to MY business…
Cardinal Metabolic & Performance. A passion for nutrition & exercise performance, coming together to form a start-up the middle of 2021. The services I provide are conducting metabolic testing services; resting metabolic rate (RMR), active Ramp Fitness testing and weekly nutritional consultations. If you’ve ever gone to a physiology lab, possibly at a local university, you might’ve had the opportunity to have an RMR and/or Vo2 test conducted. Afterwards you’re given a sheet of paper for each with a host of data filling up the paper. Unless you’re currently involved in the study of physiology or exercise testing, it looks like one massive algebraic equation not really giving you any meaningful takeaways you can build on. I hope to change that paradigm through that reporting process and therefore affecting client knowledge and self efficacy through the testing I conduct. The testing process is backed by the PNOE metabolic device and the use of other testing instruments like spirometry, which is used for collecting respiratory data & the NIRS-Moxy device, collecting data on the saturation% & utilization of muscle oxygen and hemoglobin at the particular muscle site you’re looking at. The testing process delivers actionable insights. The RMR provides anyone wanting to embark on any type of weight management protocol through daily caloric needs and energy substrate usage. The active Ramp test, highlighting potential “limiters” unique to you during exercise through testing & follow up assessment of the four pillars of metabolic health: Cardiac, respiratory, pulmonary & muscle metabolism.

Let’s have a GREAT 2022!
